How Can My Website Generate More Leads?

If you are generating very few contacts from your website, you’re not alone. The typical "conversion rate" (number of contacts divided by number of visitors) is about 1.5 percent. That means for every 1,000 visitors to your site, you generate 15 contacts. If you could raise that conversion rate to 5 or even 10 percent, what would that mean to your business?

Most people will mimic their normal "face to face" buying habits online. This means that most people want to remain anonymous until they are convinced that your product has real possibilities. The typical steps in the buying process are:

  • Locate possible vendors or suppliers
  • Gather information to evaluate products and compare vendors
  • Contact the leading candidates for specific capabilities and/or pricing
  • Purchase the product or service that most fits your needs

Think about your own buying habits. If you walk into an electronics store on a whim to look at flat screen TVs, the last thing you want is a salesperson walking up to you and trying to convince you to buy the new, state-of-the-art Sony 60” plasma. Because, at this point, you don’t know exactly what you want or how well it might fit your budget. You would prefer to look around, compare picture quality and prices, and then give a nod to a salesperson. The same holds true online.

If your website visitors are approached with your conversion tactic too soon, or without being able to properly evaluate your offerings, they will be very reluctant to give up their anonymity. On the other hand, if you can guide your visitors through the following process, you can quickly establish trust:

If you follow these basic principles, you can increase the number of visitors that are willing to give up their most prized possession…their identity. And, it stands to reason that the greater the number of leads you can generate from your website, the more revenue you can generate for your company.
