Friday Funk: “In the New, Old-Fashioned Way”
November 20th, 2009 by Eric Frye
Digital billboards are new and funky. So is the ability to market your products via “lenses” on Squidoo.com. But what we think is REALLY funky this week are “old-school” ways to convey an idea that today…raise eyebrows. Here are two examples of low-tech, creative self-expression we’ve been fascinated by all week:
Case 1: Jason Sadler of Jacksonville, FL began 2009 with a simple mission. Claiming “I am not a rock star, professional athlete, male model or anything internet spectacular,” he offered to wear any company-sponsored T-shirt of any design, all day for one day each…for a small fee. Starting Jan. 1 @ $1 and charging an additional dollar each day, he sold out every day in 2009…and surely looks forward to cashing that $365 check for New Years Eve alone!
Continuing in 2010, Jason has already sold out every day through July. His story has grown virally due to powerful media exposure, having been featured everywhere from ABC to Yahoo! (Jason has also spread the word extensively himself through social media.) Within months, his simple idea has become a bonafide marketing sensation. Companies clearly think this quiet, 1-human ad display is worth at least hundreds of dollars. Find out more about Jason’s story, or purchase a “spot” in 2010, by visiting IWearYourShirt.com. Brilliant, right?!
Case 2: Now this one is a little closer to home. And hilarious. Last week as you know, Upright SEO Director Allison Kulage gave a presentation called “Is Your SEO in Balance?” for Cincinnati tech group The Circuit. Allison received rave reviews via email, messages on her Twitter page, and feedback forms collected after the presentation. But what struck us most in reviewing the feedback was an unsigned paper table-napkin at the bottom of the pile. Written in Sharpie…well, the photo really speaks for itself (below).
Now go have a creative, low-tech weekend…and raise a few eyebrows, courtesy of Upright!
Be sure to use a napkin, too, but just not this one– we need to frame it:
