Social Media Marketing: In Action

We consistently preach the ROI effectiveness of Social Media for Business. Many of our readers are dabbling in social media, and this is great…every bit helps, and it’s important to experiment. The key factor is to find what works, and use it. Our own experimentation, using social media to spread the word about Allison’s webinar, has been fascinating.

Here are the online tools we’ve used to promote awareness for this event:

  • Email campaign – An HTML email, sent using Constant Contact to our master contact list.
  • Facebook campaign* – A Facebook Event page, to share with Upright Fans and personal friends.
  • Twitter campaign* – Upright employees have Tweeted various messages promoting the webinar.
  • LinkedIn campaign* – A LinkedIn Event page invites our professional connections to sign up, too. We also started over 30 Discussion topics in various LinkedIn Groups, to direct the public to the event page.

The result:

Before launching the campaigns above, 60 of our closest contacts were confirmed to attend.  After only 2 days of promotion, this number doubled to 120 and continues to grow, as a full week remains. Our sponsors for the webinar, DM InSite, called this morning to ask our secret in becoming their #1 most-registered webinar! Developing our promo campaign took some time, but was otherwise 100% COST-FREE.

Though the effectiveness of our efforts is measurable by attendance, promotional campaigns in social media require forgoing control and allowing the power of “viral magic.” In other words, don’t obsess over ‘ad impressions’! Viral promotion, by definition, brings in people beyond our typical sphere of influence. It is extremely important to engage this group too, as client potential lies in their lack of awareness about our company and services. Therein lies the return-on-investment, when new members of your growing community become customers.
